Foliage

Foliage is the mode for planting trees, grass, flowers and rocks on the ground. Scatter inside the brush circle, or over a whole selection at once. You can also set a shape with the tree and rock generator and place them one at a time. If you have painted biomes, foliage that matches each cell’s biome is chosen.

MethodDescription
Main toolbarPress the Foliage (scatter) button in the mode row.
Landscape modeChoose Scatter from the Mode list in the Terrain · water section.

Foliage mode has no default shortcut.

  1. Enter Foliage (scatter) mode.
  2. In Stacks (the scatter set), choose one of Forest (oak · birch), Meadow, Flower field or Rock.
  3. Set the Radius. The brush circle appears in the viewport.
  4. Click the ground. It scatters inside the circle.
  5. For a large area, select a region and press Scatter in selection.

One scatter is one undo step. Results go into the Outliner’s Foliage folder as Foliage actors per kind. Names have the form 흩뿌리기/<group>, such as 흩뿌리기/나무 · 흩뿌리기/풀, and the same group is gathered into one actor.

  1. Choose a tree or rock in Preset of the Tree · rock generator section.
  2. Shift+click the ground. One is placed at that spot.

Since 0.9.11: When you click a floor under a ceiling such as a floating slab or overhang, plants go on that floor.

Previously, scattering and Shift+click single trees were planted on the topmost ground of the column (on top of the ceiling). Now the clicked layer is used as the reference. Ordinary terrain with nothing above works as before. The Landscape height brush and green ghost use the same reference.

Points are drawn evenly while keeping a minimum spacing (Poisson disk). For each drawn point, the conditions below are checked.

ConditionDescription
DensityOnly this fraction of the spots is actually planted.
Max slope°Nothing is planted where it is steeper than this.
Ground typesPlants only on these blocks. If empty, plants on any ground.
Height limitWhen on, plants only between Min height and Max height.

If a point passes the conditions, one entry is chosen from the Entry list by Ratio. Block groups are rotated in 90° steps; props are placed with random rotation and size.

Since 0.9.4: Blocks written without a state (such as grass_block in imported maps) also match the Ground types condition.

Share sets as JSON files (np-terrain-scatter) with Load… and Save…. Saving checks spacing, density, height range and empty entries, and does not save if there is a problem.

Add and edit entries with the buttons below the Entry list.

ButtonWhat it does
Block · Tree · Rock · PropAdds a new entry of that kind.
Duplicate · Delete · Up · DownDuplicates, deletes or reorders the selected entry.

Choose an entry to edit it below.

  • Set Name, Group (tree · grass · flower · rock · prop · other) and Ratio. The group becomes the result actor’s name.
  • For a block group, write one line = dx dy dz block in the text field and press Apply blocks. dy 0 is directly above the ground.
  • For a prop, set Prop id, Min size, Max size and Random rotation.

To add a prop, check its prop id in the Content Browser, type it in the Prop id field, and press Add prop. For importing props, see Importing custom models.

When Follow biomes is on (default on), each cell is scattered with the foliage set of the biome at that spot. Paint biomes with Biome paint in Light and biomes.

  • At biome borders, the two sets blend over Biome border blend blocks. Farther from the border, each biome’s own set is used.
  • Biomes may have different minimum spacing. At borders, the sparser spacing is used.
  • Biomes without a set, and areas with no painted biome, use the Entry list above as is.
  • One line at the bottom of the panel shows the biome link status.

The following 27 biomes have biome sets.

Plains · Sunflower Plains · Meadow · Forest · Flower Forest · Birch Forest · Old Growth Birch Forest · Dark Forest · Pale Garden · Taiga · Snowy Taiga · Old Growth Spruce Taiga · Old Growth Pine Taiga · Snowy Plains · Desert · Badlands · Savanna · Jungle · Bamboo Jungle · Swamp · Mangrove Swamp · Cherry Grove · Mushroom Fields · Windswept Hills · Beach · River · Ocean

The generator starts with presets for 7 trees (oak · birch · spruce · jungle · cherry blossom · ancient · fantasy) and 7 rocks (gray boulder · mossy boulder · flat slab · rock pile · sandstone rock · standing stone · basalt pile).

  1. Choose one in Preset.
  2. When you change values, the pictures below (side · front) update immediately. The size and block count are shown too.
  3. See a different shape with the same values with Another variant.
  4. Press Add to scatter to put N variants into the Entry list. Entries with the same name are updated.
  5. Or Shift+click the ground to place just one.

  • For a dense forest, mix a few tree entries with grass entries and make the minimum spacing small.
  • If trees overlap, raise the minimum spacing to about twice the tree’s leaf radius.
  • The rock generator covers the original ground only for its Embed depth. Other cells are placed only in empty cells.
  • A single item over 60,000 blocks is cut off. If an error appears in the info line below the preview, reduce the values.
  • Scattered Foliage actors can be hidden or deleted per kind in the Outliner.
