Selection and region editing

Select a block region with the Selection tool, then edit the whole region at once with the gizmo, keys or the right-click menu. There are two kinds of selection.

Since 0.9.10: Alt+drag down (or Shift+mouse wheel down) while dragging lets you select below the starting layer.

  • While dragging, the text “Selection W×H×D = N blocks” is shown.
  • Screen rectangle selection does not pick blocks hidden behind blocks in front. Turn on Shift+drag screen select: include hidden in the Sun window on the viewport left bar to include hidden blocks.
  • You can also make a screen selection with Shift+drag · Ctrl+Shift+drag in the Place tool.

When there is a box selection in the Selection tool, small square handles appear at the center of its six faces.

  • Dragging a handle pushes or pulls only that face. The opposite face stays put. The minimum is 1 block.
  • Colors: red = X faces, green = top/bottom faces (height), blue = Z faces.
  • Press Esc to return to the box before dragging.
  • Cell-set selections have no handles.
  • Face handles change only the selection box. Blocks stay as they are.

Enter the coordinates of the two end cells in Min · Max (X · Y · Z) of the Selection group in the Details panel. For a cell-set selection, the bounding box is shown; editing it turns it into a box selection.

When there is a block selection, turn on the region gizmo with W · E · R. One drag is one undo step. The selection follows the result.

KeyGizmoDragAlt+drag
WMoveDrag an axis arrow, a plane or the center to move. A ghost shows the destination.Duplicate (original stays)
ERotateDrag the ring to rotate in 90° steps. Hold Shift to also show the X and Z rings. Stairs and doors rotate with it.(none)
RSizeDrag the + or − handles of the box to stretch or shrink it on the grid.Array (duplicates once per selection size along the dragged axis)

Since 0.9.9: Cells added with Size (R) continue the single end-face layer as it is (block, state, actor). Stretching terrain continues its height and grass/dirt cross-section. A box filled with a single block type is the same as filling with that block.

  • When you shrink, selected cells that end up outside are removed. Patterns inside the box stay as they are.
  • Empty cells in the selection are not filled. Blocks of other actors are not overwritten.
  • A new box made with Size can be up to 4 million blocks.
  • R is the Size gizmo only when a gizmo is already on. Pressed without a gizmo, it rotates the selection 90° (table below).
  • Press Q to turn the gizmo off. Esc cancels a gizmo drag in progress.
  • Move and Size move in units of the grid snap value (1 block or more) on the viewport right bar.

  • In a cell-set selection, the arrow keys, PgUp and PgDn move only the chosen cells.
  • Rotate, flip and array use the whole bounding box even for a cell-set selection.

In the Selection tool, the array fields are in the Selection group of the Tools panel.

Ctrl+ZUndo (selection box too)

Since 0.9.9: Undo and redo also restore the selection box. If you undo after moving or stretching with a gizmo, the selection returns to its original place too.

  • Changes to the selection alone (selecting, face handles, numeric input) are not recorded in the undo history.
  • If W · E · R do nothing, there is no block selection. Press Q and select a region first.
  • Hide (H) hides on screen only. It does not affect saving or exporting.
  • Moving a very large selection (over 1.5 million blocks) with a gizmo is processed as a large operation with progress.
  • You can save the selected region as a prefab (Prefabs) or stretch it with Face extrude.
